SEO vs GEO vs AEO: What Small Businesses Actually Need

Three acronyms doing three different jobs. Here is what each actually means, and which one deserves your budget first.

The search industry has a bad habit of inventing acronyms faster than it explains them. In the space of about two years, small business owners have been told they need SEO, then AEO, and now GEO, usually by someone selling all three.

The short version

Same foundation, three different finish lines.

SEO: earning the ranking

SEO is the oldest and still the most load-bearing of the three. For most local businesses, the highest-return SEO work is unfashionable: fixing page speed, making sure the site can be crawled, writing genuinely useful service pages, and getting the Google Business Profile in order.

AEO: winning the answer

AEO is about the moment a search resolves without a list. Someone asks their phone what time the hardware shop closes and gets one answer read aloud. There is no second place.

AEO does not require more content. It usually requires the content you already have, restructured so the answer is impossible to miss.

GEO: being recommended

GEO targets the growing share of searches that begin inside an AI assistant. The work adds two things: entity clarity (making it unmistakable what your business is and serves) and corroboration (making sure independent sources confirm it).

Worth being honest about

GEO is the least measurable of the three. The tooling is immature and results vary between assistants and prompts. That is an argument for keeping it proportionate, not for ignoring it.

Where they overlap

These three disciplines share most of their foundation. Fast, crawlable, well-structured pages with clear content and consistent business information serve all three at once. Be sceptical of anyone quoting three separate retainers for what is largely one body of work.

What to do first

The businesses that do well over the next few years will not be the ones who chased every acronym. They will be the ones who got the fundamentals genuinely right, then adapted the finish as search kept moving.
